Which Skilled Trades Are in Demand in Germany? Electronics, Mechatronics, HVAC and More

Do you hold an ITI certificate, a polyte Which skilled trades are in Demand in Germany? Electronics, Mechatronics, HVAC and Morechnic diploma or a technical degree? Germany reports shortages in many technical trades, but an Indian certificate alone does not open the door. Your route, recognised qualification and German level decide what is possible. This short guide covers technical jobs in Germany for Indians, including ITI jobs in Germany and Germany jobs for diploma holders.

Why Germany needs technical workers

The Federal Employment Agency (BA) reports shortages in specific occupations, not across the whole labour market. A 2026 BA release says almost half of skilled-level shortage occupations are in the crafts, especially construction, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, electrical, and mechatronics trades. Demand is linked to industrial automation, electric vehicles, renewable energy, manufacturing, and building modernization. Demand varies by region and year, so check current BA data.

Indian qualifications that may fit

  • ITI Electrician, Wireman: electrical installation.
  • ITI Electronics Mechanic: automation.
  • ITI Fitter, Machinist, Turner: industrial mechanic, CNC machinist.
  • ITI Welder: metal construction.
  • ITI Mechanic Motor Vehicle: automotive.
  • ITI Refrigeration and AC, Plumber: HVAC.
  • Diplomas in electrical, electronics, mechanical, automobile, or mechatronics: related occupations above.

Make it in Germany, which says the experienced-worker visa needs a vocational qualification of at least two years of training, so a one-year ITI course may not qualify. A German authority decides how your diploma is classified.

Recognition: regulated and non-regulated trades

Regulated occupations legally require recognition. Most trades are non-regulated, so recognition is not required to practise, but many visas for non-EU applicants rely on it. A German authority compares your training with the German occupation and finds full, partial or no equivalence. Use the Recognition Finder on the Recognition in Germany portal to find the responsible body.

German language: B1 and B2

B1 is normally required for a qualified vocational training visa; lower levels may apply with a preparatory course. Skilled worker visas vary by visa and occupation. B2 is not a general requirement for trades in the sources checked, though some employers prefer it.
