If you're an Indian nurse, doctor, or architect dreaming of working in Germany, you know the wait for qualification recognition can feel endless. Paperwork, back-and-forth, and months of uncertainty.
So a recent announcement caught our attention.
What's new?
On 15 September 2026, the European Commission put forward its proposed Skills Portability Initiative . The idea is to make it simpler and faster for qualifications earned outside the EU to be recognized across Europe.
The focus is on regulated professions like nursing, medicine, and architecture, where training standards are already harmonized across Europe. The proposal also talks about digital application procedures and binding timelines , so applicants aren't left waiting indefinitely.
So, is recognition about to become automatic?
Not yet, and it's worth being honest about that.
This is still a proposal. It needs approval from the European Parliament and the Council, and each member state, Germany included, will still decide who gets access to its own labour market. Think of it as a promising signal, not a finished change.
What should you do in the meantime?
The best move is to keep preparing, because the current process still applies. That means:
Candidates who are prepared today will be first in line, whatever the final policy looks like.
